Evaporative Cooling FAQs
Here are some of the questions we get asked the most about evaporative cooling systems.
Which is cheaper to run an evaporative cooling system or a split system air conditioner?
How much water does an evaporative cooler use?

Can I still use my evaporative cooler on a humid day?
Melbourne’s hot and dry summers means that evaporative coolers are very well suited to our climate. However, on the occasional humid day evaporative coolers don’t work as well. If it is a very humid day, it is recommended that you only use the fan.
How does evaporating cooling work?
At the core of an evaporative cooling system is a central cooling unit. Outlets are used to bring the cool air into your home. This is done when air from outside is cooled. Before it reaches the inside of your home it is filtered through pads.

Can I leave my windows and doors open when I have my evaporative cooler on?
Yes. In fact you need to open your windows or doors when you switch on your evaporative cooler. This allows the hot air to escape from your home. In addition, it is best to open the windows and doors that are away from the ducts of the evaporative cooling system This is because it will improve the cooling effect.
Being able to keep your windows and doors open is one of the main advantages of evaporative coolers. This is particularly advantageous if you or a family member suffers from allergies.

This depends on the brand and model of your evaporative cooling system. If you have an older model, you may also choose to get it serviced more regularly.
However, we recommend that you get your evaporative cooler serviced once a year – usually in Spring. This means you know your evaporative cooler will be working at its most efficient when the first hot days of summer arrive.
Is evaporative cooling environmentally friendly?
As evaporative cooling systems are designed to be an energy efficient system, it means they are better for the environment. This is because it uses a more natural form of cooling that emits less carbon dioxide.
